How to Prepare a Marketing Brief

A brief is the document that keeps a piece of marketing work honest. It states what is being done, for whom, and what will be delivered.

State the objective in one sentence

If the objective needs a paragraph, it is probably several objectives. Pick the one that matters most for this piece of work and let the others wait.

Describe the audience

Include who they are, what they are trying to achieve, and what would make them hesitate. Two or three sentences is enough if they are specific.

List the deliverables

Name each item that will be handed over. “A content plan” is ambiguous. “Content themes, twenty topic ideas and a four-week calendar” is not.

Agree the revision allowance

Say how many rounds of feedback are included and what counts as a revision rather than new work. This protects both sides.

Set the schedule and the inputs

Note when the work is expected and what you need to supply for it to start. Most delays in small projects are caused by missing information, not missing effort.

Where to take this next

If you would like this applied to your own business rather than read in the abstract, the marketing packages cover reviews, campaign planning, content plans and full strategies as fixed-scope pieces of work.
